这是一个复合词,由yard和stick组合而成,yard源自古英语单词geard(院子)或gerd(棍子)。在人类未发现测量工具之前,人们便用有固定长度的棍子作为衡量长短的标准。因此,原来只是一根普通棍子的yard变成了一个长度单位。而yardstick成为“码尺”,以后又由此引申出“衡量标准”“评价标准”等意。

晚清时期,广大中国人深受鸦片的毒害,导致许多家庭妻离子散、家破人亡。很多中国人吸食鸦片成瘾,十九世纪中期进入美国的华工中也不乏有烟瘾的人。美国人目睹了犯烟瘾者渴望吸食鸦片的模样,明白yenyin(烟瘾)对人的危害之大,由此也学会用这个名词来表达“渴望”“嗜好”。
也有人说yen是yenyin中“瘾”(yin)的讹用,美国人很可能原想以“烟瘾”喻指“渴望”“嗜好”,但却取错了字,把中国人的“瘾头”变成了英语中的“烟头”。
